The BMW MINI has managed to keep the key characteristic of the classic mini which was it's handling. BMW have managed to achieve this by adopting the McPherson suspension strut principle on the front axel and a brilliant multi-link rear suspension setup.
The front axel setup has been improved by incorporating a drive shaft bearing in the side of the engine block allowing for both driveshafts to be the same length. This is unusual in this class as other cars in the class usually have differing length drive shafts which doesn't provide as good feedback for the driver.
The rear suspension is designed in such a way that the the rear tyres are always at optimal angel to the camber of the road which allows for awesome road handling but also is small and compact enough to fit within the confines of a small space to allow for room in the rear and boot.
Both MINI One and MINI Cooper models have an anti-roll bar on the front axle which is reinforced on the MINI Cooper and S. In addition, MINI Cooper has an additional anti-roll bar on the rear axle, a sporty chassis and Sports suspension. It is also lower by 8 mm.
